December 2023

Santana Golf 28th December 2023

Our last game of 2023 was played at Mijas Los Lagos and was a Texas Scramble and we were kindly sponsored by Jonathan Furlong.

With 23 players we had 1 team with 3 players in and 5 teams of 4 players. With it being a medal format the team of 3 had 15% of there total handicaps taken off there score at the end with the teams of 4 having 10% taken off.

On a warm, calm day it was still a tough day with many tees pushed back including the 235 yard par 3 8th hole

A first for the society was that we had a tie for one of the nearest the pins on the 11th hole between Jonathan Furlong and Gary Sparrow. This meant that we had to consult a knowledgeable rules official, but alas he wasn’t available so Bob Sawyer decided for us. After much deliberation and thought into it he came up with a innovative final answer which was to decide the winner of the fine wine with a coin toss

. After 1 failed attempt where Bob dropped the coin Jonathan eventually won it

After the presentation it was sadly announced by Bob that one of our members, Tony White, had passed away on Xmas eve after a few health issues the last few months. I’m sure the whole society sends there condolences to Tony’s wife and young family.

Next week we start the 2024 order of merit season at Santana with the first tee time at 10.00. At present we only have 2 spaces left.

Rio Real 21st December 2023

Our last game before Xmas on Thursday was played at the magnificent Rio Real golf course and we were kindly sponsored by Paul Watts.

On a glorious day with temperatures just below 20 degrees, sorry to all of you in the UK freezing your butt’s off, the course as ever proved a very very tough test with only 3 scores In the 30’s.

Our winner carried on his fine form and came in with a great score, winning by 5 shots and although we tried to cut him more he only came down 1 shot. With all the bottles he keeps winning lately you would think that would be enough but in the raffle back at the Red Dragon his wife won another bottle in the raffle, so if you want a few drinks over Xmas and New Year I’d say pop round to their house . The only thing they never won was the weekly football card but none of us really had a chance of that because Jill for the 3rd week running managed to win this.

Santana GC 14th December 2023

Thursday’s game was played at our home course Santana and was kindly sponsored by Don Crowley.

With the weather still glorious and still no rain the temperature were only cooled by a strong breeze which made the course play difficult at times, this brought the usual high scores for Santana down, well this was apart from 1 player who enjoyed a comfortable 7 shot victory with the rest of the field all closely bunched up behind him.

Most of you should of received an email from John Yuill regarding membership renewal, please pay as soon as possible so shirts can be ordered etc, Bearing in mind the membership numbers will be limited in 2024

Santa Maria 7th December 2023

Our latest game on Thursday was played at Santa Maria and was kindly sponsored by Jay Cochrane who unfortunately couldn’t play due to work commitments but still wanted to sponsor.

After some overnight rain which is most welcome here in Spain due to the fact we are in drought conditions, the weather was back to normal on the day but the course was not in the best condition which showed in lower scoring at the course than normal. This made for a very close game with the top 5 within 1 point of each other and the coveted top 3 places all vying for Andy Hassall’s fine wines as prizes being decided on countback.
