Marbella GCC 29th February 2024

After last weeks slick greens at Rio Real we thought we would have some respite with some slower greens but yet again we were met with some fast greens and tricky pin placements.

Rio Real 22nd Februray 2024

This weeks game was played down at Rio Real which is one of the best courses on the society’s schedule and were kindly sponsored by Bob Sawyer.

As usual the course was in great condition and proved a very tough test especially the greens which were some of the quickest we have played for a very long time added in with some wicked pin positions there was many a tale of woe told about having a putt towards the hole and it sailing by and off the green, with all these factors the winning scores were quite low this week.

Mijas – Los Olivos 15th February 2024

This week we played at Mijas Los Olivos and were kindly sponsored by Gordon Bathgate.

As some may be aware Los Olivos late last year had a problem with the greens due to damage done by contaminated water forcing it to close for a while, a few weeks ago it still wasn’t in the best of shape so it was a great surprise to us all on Thursday that they had done a great job getting them back to normal.

After the golf instead of going back to the Red Dragon we popped into El Golf bar at the end of the Los Lagos course for a drink and some tapas. When all the tales of woe had been told and also the stories of luck about balls skimming across water and onto dry land had been mentioned, the cards were checked and we had a 3 way tie at the top which went to a back 9 countback.

Eventually our winner was confirmed and the saying of ” If at first you don’t succeed, try ,try and try again” and never was this more appropriate then for our winner who informed us that it was his first win in 7 years of playing with the society.

Santana Golf 8th February 2024

This weeks game we were back at Santana for our first Medal game of the year and were kindly sponsored by Pat O’Connor.

This was our first qualifier for the Medal finals day in November and to try to boost numbers for the final we have decided that the first 2 players in each category ie gross and net will go through.

The course as ever was in great condition with some wicked pin positions.

As usual we had our nearest the pins on various holes and a first as far as I can remember that one was a tie with the 2 playing partners both agreeing there was nothing between them.

There were 2 singles knockout matches played with Pat O’Connor beating Jonathan Furlong and Bob Sawyer beating Dennis “chip in” Regan in a good contest that I witnessed and as you can gather by Dennis’s new nickname just when Bob thought he’d won the hole, up would pop Dennis a couple of times and chip in to win the hole even after visiting the water the previous shot.
